ANGER MANAGEMENT TREATMENT & EDUCATION
The Utah Justice Foundation provides the following general information with regard to the role Anger Management Treatment/Education Classes can play in connection with a criminal defendant's case and the criminal justice system in the state of Utah. Our Featured Service Provider (see right column) is available to assist you or anyone you may care about. For information about an online resource for anger management, we suggest watching the brief video (less than 1 minute) in the right column below, Anger Management Classes Online.
Generally speaking, anger management classes should and are required by the Court for probation to be ordered as a part of sentencing in cases where "violence" was (or is alleged to have been) involved. Therefore, the Court will order this type of treatment and education in connection with cases involving the following types of charges:
Many, if not most, defendants wait to begin anger management treatment/education classes until after they are ordered by the Court to do so. We believe that this is a huge mistake. The most important thing to realize is that anger management treatment/education is for the defendant's benefit, so the sooner he or she gets started, the sooner the personal benefits may be realized.
The Utah Justice Foundation stronly recommends beginning anger management treatment/education classes immediately, and most importantly, before appearing before the Court for sentencing. Now, this would definitely be the best approach if the defendant anticipates pleading guilty to a charge(s). This issue of when to start treatment may be approached a bit differently if the defendant does not anticipate a guilty plea or conviction given a competent attorney's opinion.
What is Anger Management Treatment and Education?
Anger management treatment centers around educating the individual about the root or source of the anger he or she expeiences. In other words, the focus is on first identifying the CAUSE of the person's anger.
Then, a good anger management class will assist the individual in developing effective skills to understand, manage and prevent anger and the inevitiable aggression that follows it. In other words, the focus then shifts to helping the person develop COPING SKILLS that will be effective in preventing the bad behavior.
In summary, various assesment tools are used to determined the CAUSE or souce of an individual's anger. Once identified, appropriate cognitive approaches are used to help the individual develop COPING SKILS to effectively deal with the trigger(s) of the anger in order to prevent it from occuring and leading to bad (criminal) behavior.
